As the sun sank behind the mountain, Walter and Donny hiked up through the junipers, looking for openings to shoot back across the draw at the yellow A-zone steel set up in an opening. They found their first opening at 175 yards and set up shop, including a tripod and folding chair to help Walter with his ailing spinal injury.Â
Walter recommends all bowlers pick up some a zone steel.
The ballistic solution on the Subsonic ranging card lined up damn near perfect with Walter's 16-inch Ruger American Ranch, only being half a mil off at 300 yards, 12.1 mils compared to 12.6 mils. Past 300, the hits became far less frequent, with slight differences in velocity and changes in wind leading the bullet off course. Walter and Donny connected at 445, but the consistency was a far cry from the hits at 300.Â
The reality is that most bowling and most hunting are done within this window, and the terminal ballistics of the Discreet Ballistics 188gr Selous Expanders are more than sufficient. A very good range estimate is needed for this kind of shooting; that's why Walter made the Subsonic Hunting Card. Sure, this bowling can be done, but what's the upside, Walter? The upside young bowler is that's laugh out loud quiet, and there's lots of applications for that capability.Â
The 188 grainers feel like you’re throwing broad heads more than bullets.

With the arrival of the first stars, Walter and Donny headed back to camp to enjoy some venison sausage from last year's hunt. In the morning, they were back at it, looking for blacktails in the dense junipers and sage. It wasn't long until they spotted a few at 175 yards, or 5.5 mils, according to the Subsonic Hunting Card.
